Androgyny Image

Marlene Dietrich, the German-American actress enjoyed a long career in film and theatre. Her first Hollywood film, Morocco, created one of the most enduring images of her as a cross-dressing dandy in a tuxedo. She enjoyed wearing mens' uniforms and appeared in such garb in at least one other film, Seven Sinners, dressed as a male Navy officer. During World War II, Dietrich took a strong anti-Nazi stance and performed extensively with the USO throughout Africa and Europe, winning a medal of honor for her efforts. She is seen in the image at left signing autographs for the troops during a tour stop in Algiers.
